Patient Testimonials
Over the years we have collected numerous success stories, four books full, in fact. Patients often enjoy browsing through these books while waiting in our reception area. It is always encouraging to hear the struggles that patients have had and their experiences with prolotherapy and other treatments in this office. To that end, we have put together this full page of testimonials.
"This is my fifth prolotherapy appointment and I have seen significant improvement. Before I began treatment I had no movement in my neck. I now have almost full range of motion. My headaches have diminished and I am feeling much better. I am 19 years old and I am now able to participate in activities that I want to. I have enjoyed meeting Dr. Wheaton and Brodie." Kathryn C.
"Very active Type-A, too much tennis, ball machines, etc gave me terrible neck pain and steady headache pain and discomfort that I had never experienced. I had many cortisone and nerve treatments plus 35 acupuncture treatments, physical therapy and saw a neurosurgeon who said he would not touch my neck because he wouldn't know where to start. Then I heard about prolo and Dr. Mark - I was desperate. After 5 treatments, the pain and headaches started to fade so I stayed with it for 9 treatments. A month later I had no pain at all. I went back to tennis, playing and hitting again. I can hardly believe what I went through and what I am able to do and enjoy with no pain today!" Martin B.
"It has now been close to one year since my first prolotherapy treatment and my headaches are pretty much gone. A year ago with the headaches and pain in my arm and neck I had lost all hope of feeling normal again. Now, most of the pain is gone and I can lead a normal life - thanks to Dr. Wheaton's treatments." Joel H.
"I came in with neck soreness, shoulder soreness, and numbness in my thumb, index finger, and middle finger of my left hand. After three treatments spread over three months, all extremity symptoms are gone and I only have a bit of neck soreness left which should resolve after a couple more treatments. I originally had prolotherapy ten years ago for another back problem that conventional medical surgeons were unable to resolve. I am definately sold on prolotherapy." Tim D.
"I have received seven prolotherapy treatments on my neck and elbow. I had chronic pain in these areas due to repetitive use injuries related to my job. Before I started prolotherapy, it was extremely painful to perform activities such as baseball and tennis with my children. Now, I can perform these activities, as well as, activities related to my job (cardiac sonographer) virtually pain-free, with improvement after each session." Bryan S
"Coming across this prolotherapy has finally given me some hope of getting my life back to normal. After a car accident in 2001, I have had severe headaches and constant neck and shoulder pain and tightness. In just three treatments my symptoms have been reduced considerably. I had been seeing other doctors and chiropractors for 6 years - now I plan on avoiding any other treatments I would recommend this for anyone in chronic pain." Joel H.
"Before being treated with prolotherapy I was in so much pain I was basically a cripple. My neck and back went out every day. It has been about two and one half years since my entire spine, shoulders, elbows and wrists were treated with prolotherapy. My body is healed. I have no more pain. I am strong and healthy again. I am able to do whatever I want to without being in pain and having to worry about my back going out. I am able to exercise regularly again, make progress, and be strong and confident. I am a whole new person now because the pain is gone. I am very happy!" John S.
"I am so thankful that God has led me to Dr. Wheaton in my pursuit of living a pain-free life. He helped me achieve that goal. After struggling with pain throughout much of my body for the last ten years, I can finally say I am pain-free and feel fabulous!! I was having trouble standing long enough to even get through a shower, couldn't bring my arms up far enough to comb my hair, and had been living with a constant headache 24/7 for about a year and a half. Life didn't hold much joy for me anymore and I had tried every available option through the normal channels of the medical field. My family doctor had told me I was just going to have to learn to live with pain. Well he was wrong. After 6 visits to Dr. Wheaton I am pain-free. I have been walking, jogging short distances, riding bike, swimming and even water skiing!! I might even try to get back on my roller blades soon. I think my family doctor was quite amazed when I went in for a physical last week and discovered I was doing so well. Thank you Dr. Wheaton, I am forever grateful." Cherlyn C.
"So far I have had 4 prolotherapy treatments for TMJ. My jaw has already improved almost 100%. It used to click and pop whenever I ate anything. Now it hardly ever does this anymore. Not having pain everytime I eat is so nice. Thank you Dr. Wheaton!" Nicki K.
"Before prolotherapy I had to use two canes to get around. I couldn't stand up straight and was about to go get a "scooter" to get around. I am only 59 but have severe scoliosis and fibromyalgia. I couldn't ride in a car without severe pain and inabaility to get out of a car and stand and walk properly. My husband had to get groceries. Now, after a year of treatment, I can ride in a car with just a few problems, and get groceries and even stand up and walk normally! It is such a blessing to be nearly normal again. I can't wait to finish it and be completely healed and have a good life." Diane P.
"I came to Dr. Wheaton with some chest pain that could not be treated by my doctor in Waconia. Pain meds were tried but nothing could be done to cure the pain. As I live an active lifestyle, it was very frustrating to lose activities I loved to do. The prolotherapy has allowed me to slowly ease back into those activities I lost. Without these treatments I am almost certain I would be in the same rut I was a year ago. For anyone with chronic pain, I would definitely recommend this treatment." Justin R.
"Today I had my fourth prolo treatment. I have had pain off and on for 6 years but progessing so that the last year it was much worse. I was taking Percocet 4-6 per day and now the past month have had a dramatic change and on average take 0-1 per day. I have "slipping rib syndrome" and felt my rib dislocate and click out of place several times a day and that situation has markedly improved as well with only rare occurences now. For the first time I have hope that I will not have to live a life with chronic pain." Linda M.
"After four sets of shots in both my chest and back (rib area) there has been a dramatic decrease in the amount of discomfort in that area -- for the first time in 2 years life is good!"" Steve B.
"My name is Steve and I am a PGA golf professional. My last couple years have been very painful with constant shoulder and upper back pain. With prolotherapy I have been able to practice and play every day! To be honest, I feel God led me to Dr. Wheaton for prolotherapy as nothing else has worked. I have tried 5 or 6 chiropractors, many physical therapists and have not had the same results. I highly recommend Dr. Wheaton and prolotherapy. Thank you so much."" Steve W.
"After my fourth session of prolotherapy I have noticed improvement in many different areas. I am being treated for a rib dislocation (dysfunction) and pain in my back and chest as a result of the rib. I can now do the lifting I could do before the injury with ease. The pain went on for a long period of time and was affecting my physical and mental well being. On top of my chest and back feeling better, I'm happier than I have been in over two years. Thank you very much Dr. Mark Wheaton." Alex S.
"I had quit working in June 1998 and taken disability due to low back and hip pain. I had been to physical therapy off and on over the years, but that was just a band-aid treatment. I weaned myself off pain pills and starting healing oil massages, which were a help and more healing than the physical therapy. But the REAL help and cure of my pain began when I started taking the prolotherapy treatment from Dr. Wheaton. I'm getting my life back!! With little or no pain now, compared to years of suffering and being unable to do many things, I am now doing things I haven't done for nine years!" Jeanette S.
"My back had been off and on for six months. It would get better for a week then I would go to a tennis tournament and hurt it again. I had to default out of 7 tournaments in a row. I had tried physical therapy this whole time and it had not been working. I hurt my back in August and started coming here in February. I saw immediate results and my back was getting better right away. It has been 4 months that I have been getting these treatments and my back is completely better. I have played through a full high school season now and a full tournament. The results are amazing and have helped me so much. I am back on track for tennis." David E. (age 16)
"I did six months of prolotherapy treatments on my lower back and now it has been six months since my last treatment. I was in constant pain prior to beginning treatment. Now, I can move pain-free. I have not thrown my back out in over two years. Prior to treatment I needed to take Advil every day. I now have gone 2 full years without taking any Advil at all. I sleep better at night, I can do physical activity. My demeanor has changed - I am happier because I have less pain...as in no pain. It was so effective that I am now beginning treatment on my hips and butt. Dr. Wheaton and his staff are very professional and empathetic to the concerns I've had with my health and their treatment has proved to be wildly successful."
Anne M.
"The difference in my back after two treatments was nothing short of amazing. I was having muscle spasms that would take me to the floor in pain and I was no longer able to do the physical things I was accustomed to, even extending to the usual and customary house work. These things are no longer a problem and I'm anxious to try rock laying!"
"Prolotherapy is the ONLY treatment that has relieved my pain. I have had chronic back pain for over 40 years! What a blessing prolotherapy has been for me! I can actually be a human being now." Connie R
"I started back in April with treatments on my back, lumbar, and sacral areas. I saw great results after about four treatments and quickly moved on to other areas like my hip. I have had such great results, I moved on to my ankles and now up to my neck. Dr. Mark Wheaton has great bed-side manner and really makes the treatment a great experience. The fact that it is a permanent thing just makes it that much better. I would gladly recommend his services to anyone with joint and muscle problems." Justin D.
"I had suffered with sciatic-like pain down my leg for four months. I was unable to walk up and down stairs at work, to the end of the driveway to get the mail, or into church without extreme pain. I had amazing results 7 years ago with low back pain and prolotherapy, so when my doctor recommended cortisone I knew I needed to make the four hour drive and come back to Dr. Wheaton. I am now back to walking my dog every day and ready to work in my flower beds. Thank you Doc!" Susan M.
"I have had 6 prolotherapy treatments. My problem was with looseness of the SI joints. I have had about 70% improvement over when I started in October. When the SI joint does move out of position I am able to do my exercises learned in physical therapy to get back in position and then go on with activities."
"Today was my ninth treatment to the low back, hip, SI joint and pubic area. I am continuing to see improvement in my ability to sustain low-impact exercise, mostly walking, with some low-key gardening. I notice a big improvement at work where I teach K-6 students. Large parts of my day are spent moving from one position to another, e.g. floor to chair to standing, back to floor, leaning over and bending down. It's important to be at eye-level with 5-year-olds in order to be an effective teacher. I still have some days where I feel pain and have to limit my moving around, but there has been a significant change. Often I don't think about moving, I just do it!" Debbie Z.
"A large improvement since this is my 8th visit to repair the lumbar / sacroiliac joint. I can walk comfortably 3 miles, which is a bigr step from starting out with 1 block ranges. I am getting a life back with more mobility. This is beneficial for someone like myself with chronic pain of Fibromyalgia. I advise this approach over conventional treatments. Dr. Wheaton's bedside manner is beneficial and so kind." Louise D.
"I've had 2 injuries to my left SI and fell on my tailbone once. For over 16 years I have dealt with the pain in these two areas. Before seeing Dr. Wheaton, I was told there was nothing that could be done for my pain. 'Take Advil, put cold pack on, oh, and here are 14 exercises to do daily.' My pain caused me to stop walking my dog, doing yoga, and affected my daily routine around the house (cleaning, dressing) and eventually I had to stay home from work to lay on my stomach in bed. Sitting was a nightmare, so meetings and paperwork at a desk were difficult to tolerate. Now, after four prolo treatments I can do any of those tasks and have minimal to no pain!! And, being a good Minnesotan, I can even shovel and snowblow without ill effects. Prolotherapy is more than pain treatments, it has helped me be able to do the little things we all take for granted. I look forward to being able to lift my leg without pain to go snowshoeing this winter. Prolotherapy has given me movement back without repercussions. Thanks to Dr. Wheaton I can live without pain and with activity." Gina R.
"After 13 years of chronic pelvic pain, I am happy to say that prolotherapy combined wth trigger point injections are working to resolve the pain. Over a 12-month period of treatments, I have gone from a sitting tolerance of 15 minutes to near normal! Without these treatments my life would not be the same. I am very pleased that I took the risk of a somewhat unknown procedure." Stuart P.
"I have been unable to sit or walk comfortably for a year and a half. I saw an orthopedic doctor immediately after my injury and had twenty physical therapy sessions which helped somewhat, but I still could not resume my yoga or wear regular slacks. I have had six prolotherapy treatments and am seeing more improvement than before. The first four treatments were difficult but I started seeing improvement between the fifth and sixth. I am walking every day now without pain." Lucia T.
"In December of 2006 I had daily pain and it was difficult to walk. After treatments I could speed walk and have been virtually pain-free. Some weakness still remains and restrictions on exercise so I had another treatment today. I am so grateful for having this treatment as an opportunity to restart the healing process for my pelvis. Thank you so much Dr. Wheaton." Andrea J.
"During my 5th month of pregnancy with our 4th child I started to have pain radiating down my inner thighs. I saw over 7 doctors and they couldn't figure out what was wrong. Finally one of them saw in an x-ray osteitis pubis. I found Dr. Wheaton and Ernest Huhta through the internet. I have had 10 prolotherapy sessions. I am 90% healed. I can walk pain-free, carry my son and enjoy life. One doctor had recommended surgery that involved a plate and screws in my pubic bone area with only a 50% success rate and I would have been in a wheelchair for 4 months. Prolotherapy has changed my life. Ifeel so good, it has affected my emotional and physical being. Being only 38 I was so scared I would be in pain for the rest of my life. It has brought so much relief and peace. Although it has been very expensive, because insurance doesn't cover it, my health is worth it. Thank you, thank you Dr Wheaton and Ernest. I so appreciate all you've done for me and my family." Courtney H.
"I have been struggling with shoulder pain for two years now brought on by a daily Ashtanga yoga practice. The pain has caused me to modify my yoga practice significantly for the past couple of years. Today, I had my fourth prolotherapy treatment and I have begun to see significant improvement. I am no longer waking up five times a night and I am slowly reclaiming my yoga practice. Strength too is slowly on the rise. I feel very hopeful things will only continue to get better. Thank you, Dr. Wheaton." Margaret H.
"I've been in chronic pain for several years. My shoulders were extremely bad and since having prolotherapy for a year, I am very pleased with the results. No more chronic pain! There is also much more stability in my neck and I have not been to a chiropractor since my first treatment months ago." Judy M.
"Today is my fifth treatment. Six months ago I could not put on my coat without pain. I injured my right shoulder years ago and I damaged it again two years ago trying to throw a football. I had to give up swimming because of the pain and I gained about 15 pounds as a result of the inactivitiy. I started prolotherapy in January. The results have far exceeded my expectations. Last month, after my fourth treatment, I started swimming again. I have full range of motion and no pain. I am losing weight and feel better than I have in years. Even my blood pressure is down. My shoulder is pain-free and the "clicks" and "pops" have disappeared. This treatment is amazing." Ed R.
"I came to Dr. Wheaton's office about a year ago and I hardly had any use of my right arm and shoulder. It has been an up and down battle for the past year (mostly up). I am very glad I came here, the treatments were well worth it. I can use my arm and shoulder with very little pain now. The improvement has been impressive. Thanks to Dr. Wheaton!" Todd N.
"Some time back I injured my left shoulder to the point where I could not reach back. The loss of extension was debilitating. I couldn't even reach to the bedside table to switch off the light. I saw very little natural improvement over a period of 9 months or more. I then had the 1st prolotherapy injection into the shoulder and in a few days was experiencing healing. Another treatment followed a few weeks later and again within a week or less I could reach back to 99% of my right arm reach! Prolotherapy by Dr. Wheaton was wonderful."" Bruce W.
"After 8 prolotherapy treatments on my elbows, I have at least 85% improvement. I had a setback due to overuse, but switched to fish oil treatments with immediate results. I can even hold a pen to write this without any pain!" Laura N.
"I had read that cortisone shots weaken your tendons and you should avoid cortisone treatments. A friend of mind recommended Dr. Wheaton who treated tendonitis without using cortisone. I have had four treatments and my pain is 98% gone. If I needed any similar treatment I would use Dr. Wheaton and I would recommend him to my friends." Tim D.
"Knowing that my elbow is going to be healed rather than temporarily fixed is a good feeling. When I started therapy I couldn't lift a gallon of milk on to a counter without major pain. After two treatments I am 80-90% from normal strength - what a relief knowing my elbow is gaining strength without any medication. I will continue this treatment on other joints as well! Thank you." Jerry
"I'm not quite sure how I developed elbow tendinitis, but I somehow did. It came on quite slowly, but finally reached an unbearable point. I decided it was not going away so I went to see my orthopedist who quickly diagnosed it as tendinitis. He prescribed anti-inflammatories and gave me a band to wear around the tendon. Neither helped. He also told me to ice it often which I did without an relief. I eventually went back to see my orthopedist and he gave me a cortisone shot, which offered no relief either. I was so discouraged and frustrated that nothing was helping. I went months with very little sleep because my arm hurt so much. I couldn't get it comfortable, every position hurt. I couldn't touch my nose with my hand, I could barely pick up my coffee cup. I heard about Dr. Wheaton and prolotherapy, so I researched it and immediately made an appointment. So far, I have had five treatments, and I believe I had huge improvements shortly after my first treatment. After each treamtent I have had more improvement. I am now able to do everything I did before. I even water-skied this past summer with no problems. Dr. Wheaton plans to do a few more treatments so that I have close to 100% improvement. Prolotherapy has been the only thing to give me relief from unbearable pain."" Deborah A.
"I have had 5 injections for tennis elbow. I had two cortisone injections prior to seeing Dr. Wheaton and my arm had atrophied but is now returning to normal. My pain has decreased by 75%" Ginny P.
"I have had issues with both of my elbows for years. I tried physical therapy, cortisone injections and surgery. None of this provided long-term relief. After my fourth round of prolotherapy I started to notice significant improvement. I am on my sixth round of treatments and feel that I am at about 75% of a full recovery." Dan H.
"It has been over a year since my last round of prolotherapy treatments and I am very happy to report that the areas treated are doing great. Definitely stronger with the wrist joint in particular being more stable. Although not cured entirely (and I didn’t expect that); your treatments have made a significant difference that allows me to play my guitar or just do any tasks, etc for longer periods without pain. It’s nice not having to be so cautious about pushing the envelope a little. Thanks so much for your help." Jeff P.
"I started out having wrist pain while writing and while doing other daily tasks. The pain also took away my ability to play my musical instruments. I also had problems with my foot that would occur especially after having walked too much. Lately my daily tasks haven't given me wrist pain and I've been writing without mishap. I've also been able to walk longer without pain. Traditional therapy didn't help half as much!" " Christ S.
"This was my fourth visit for my wrists. I was trying to find something to take the place of surgery which my dad had. I believe it was just a matter of time. I can tell the strength increase the most. My wrists feel much more stable. There is still some soreness but not the sharp pain I felt before when I did quick movements. Also, I am able to do very strenuous physical labor. My job hasn't suffered and that to me is a very good plus for this treatment." Jerry
"13 years ago I had wrist surgery, which had degenerated to severe arthritis. The orthopedic surgeon said my only options were either to fuse the wrist, or remove a row of bones with a 70% chance things would grown back together. It is now 14 months since my last prolo treatment and I am still completely pain-free. I have more range of motion than I have had since the surgery 13 years ago. I am starting treatment on the left elbow with every expectation the results will be as good as a year ago with the wrist." Alan S.
"Today I stand a stronger person physically and emotionally. After being diagnosed with Rheumatoid Arthritis (RA) I was devastated to find that the pain was so horrible and my life had changed so dramatically that I could barely work and my active lifestyle was gone. I found Dr. Wheaton and prolotherapy through an article in a magazine. Not wanting to go on any medication for RA, I wanted to give this a shot (literally, I found out later!). The comfort for me was Dr. Wheaton was an M.D. and the natural tilt was there. On my first visit, I was thrilled to have discovered Dr. Wheaton, Brodie and Jenny. I am on my 4th treatment and now am able to walk without a limp, increase my activities and people say I have the "spark" back in my life. I still have work to be done, but am so very grateful for Dr. Wheaton, his staff and prolotherapy. Thank you so much! Janine M.
P.S. - I wrote (handwritten version) this.... which I could not have accomplished two months ago!"
"I've had four treatments for both hands and wrists. I talk with my hands (gesture) as I speak and when I started treatments I had been noticing my awkwardness at doing so and people's expressions of concern at how "bad" and painful my hands looked (making me pretty self-conscious at continuing to use my hands when I talk!) The knuckles were prutruding up, fingers not hanging straight but angling way off and fingers swayed back! You know sometimes you get used to things too much. Fast forward four months, I've had two separate compliments on how beautiful my hands are - "such long beautiful fingers" they all go straight like they should, swelling of the knuckels is greatly reduced and my dexterity is better. What a thrilling process. Thank you God and Dr. Wheaton! Lynne A.
"I had hip problems in 2003. I received six prolotherapy treatments and have not had any issues since. Now I am having my hands and left shoulder worked on. I am hopeful for the same results as my hips." Jon S.
"I started getting hip pain - bursitis, about 5 years ago. My doctor took x-rays (no arthritis) and blood work and wanted to prescribe pain meds and a sleep aid. I did not want to take that route at age 49, so she sent me to a rhematologist. He injected my swollen bursa with cortisone and I had immediate relief for 3 months. When I went back for my 5th shot I complained that I didn't think I should get so many cortisone shots. 'But why am I still getting swollen bursa I asked?' After further examination he decided I was hypermobile. Ernest Huhta, agreed and said it was time I saw Dr. Mark. I have received five treatments and am almost 75% improved!! I can sleep on my side again and even cross my legs without pain. Walking is a pleasure again...no pain meds and no sleep aid! Thank you Dr. Mark. I have complete confidence to use prolo on my shoulders and neck areas now." Judy H.
"Well, it looks like the prolotherapy on my left hip is complete. It is amazing the difference these shots have made. Two years ago in November, I needed a cane. Today I do 50 minutes of exercise per day without any pain. I am very grateful to Dr. Wheaton and to God for my recovery. You don't now how important that is to me." Diane H.
"For 1 1/2 years I suffered great pain in my right hip and going down my leg. At times I was unable to walk ever a 1/2 block. I had to lift my leg up into the car with my hand. Walking up stairs " Diane H.
"I came in the spring of 2007 after being told that I needed knee replacement and being close to not being able to walk. I have had three treatments up to this date and have experienced pretty close to complete recovery. I am able to do all I used to do and experience no pain or side effects from treatment. It absolutely works and has gone beyond my expectations. I think it is terrific! I will definitely come back if I need this treatment for any reason! Terrific doctor! Love you, Dr. Wheaton, for making me 'good as new'." Randy B.
"A good friend had seen Dr. Wheaton and told me about prolotherapy. The previous work on my knee was conventional meniscus repair. But it had gotten continually worse. After 3 treatments with Dr. Wheaton, I have had fantastic improvement. I recommend anyone in this type of situation to see and consult with Dr. Wheaton." Steve K.
"I came in to Dr. Wheaton with great skepticism. I had played competitive racquetball for many years and had developed very sore kness in the last 2 years. The orthopedic doctors had said that most of my lining was gone and I was a candidate for knee replacement in both knees. I had tried cortisone shots, injections of Synvisc in the joints, but nothing seemed to work. I am 57-years-old and did not want knee replacement at my age because I would probably have to have it done again in 10-15 years. I started coming to Dr. Wheaton about 1 year ago; skeptical at first, but as the months went by my knees felt better and better. I still get pain when I stand for long periods of time, but nothing like before. It is 1000% better! Thank you so much."" Tom G. s
"After seven treatments, I am able to walk, kneel, cross my legs, and stand for long periods without pain in my knee. This after 20 years of chronic problems!! My scars from surgery 20 years ago have faded remarkably. I feel extremely stable and ready to start a running regimen. PAIN-FREE!" Beth O.
"I was seen by a host of traditional orthopedic physicians. My knee alignment was off, causing terrible pain. Dr. ___________ at Fairview University said in front of her residents that my career as a cook is over.... I am now bicycling 16 miles a couple times a week. I returned to work full-time, doing 8-12 hour shifts, walking up hill, and stairs are no longer painful. My knees are no longer noisy, and during a weather change I no longer feel arthritis pains. There is now more stability in my kness. Thanks! I thought I was ready for the glue factory!" Diane H.
"I caught my foot on some stairs 4 years ago - my leg doubled back underneath me. I was diagnosed with patellofemoral pain syndrome. The doctor told me it would take a year to heal. It did take a year, but I re-injured the knee about 4 months ago and this time I tried prolotherapy. The knee is 80-90% better after 3 treatments. I just had my 4th and am not currently planning to have any more. My hope was that my knee would not take a year to heal like it did last time. It appears that I will easily meet that goal. Thank you for offering this treatment."" David B.
"I have had pain for over 30 years, to the point of getting a consultation for knee replacement. Since treatment, I have had a steady improvement of less pain, more mobility in my knee and it is getting stronger. My limp is even getting better after 30 years. " J.C.
"I continue to feel that the prolo treatments to my ankle are beneficial. I catch myself doing small movements I had quit thinking about doing before a couple of months ago. I enjoyed an active fall touring Switzerland, hunting ducks and pheasants, and walked my daughter down the aisle to be married. The mild winter has allowed for outdoor walks and I am pleased with the distance I am covering without discomfort." Tom S.
"I have been treating my ankle injury over the past 1 1/2 years with physical therapy, acupuncture, massage therapy and electrical stim. While those treatments help, nothing compares to the results I have received after 4 session of prolotherapy. I have felt a thickening in my tissues and greater stability with diminished pain overall. I am a believer in prolotherapy. I am a massage therapist (18 years in practice) and now have another treatment to recommend to my clients. Thank you Dr. Wheaton and Brodie for your great care and service." Dorothy D.
"I continue to marvel at the increased use, with less and less pain I am seeing in my ankle being treated with prolotherapy. I am seeing myself doing tasks involving ankle motion in a nearly normal manner. Yesterday I walked 18 holes of golf - I hadn't done that since the 2005 golf season." Tom S.
"I broke a bone in my ankle while waterskiing and also damaged my subtalar ankle joint. I discovered prolotherapy on the internet. Doctors wanted to fuse my joint, but I already had very little movement anyway. Prolotherapy has given me 70% use of the joint and reduced pain 25-40%. I plan to continue treatments as needed." John S.
"I started prolotherapy June 29, 2007. The bones in both feet have not "popped" out of place since then. Both kness are also much stronger. I spent a week in Ireland and was able to spend every day walking up and down castle stairs, across the moors, etc.! My improvement is tremendous. Even pressing on pressure points that caused great discomfort in June did not cause pain today. The four treatments I've had so far have provided excellent results!" Lorelei K.
"I cannot say enough about prolotherapy. It has been a true source of healing for me. I was told by other doctors that expensive surgery was my only option to repair my joints. I was in constant pain, in my feet, shoulder and back. Prolotherapy has not only relieved my pain and allowed me to function again, but it has actually healed my joints. No surgery! I love prolo! Thank you Dr. Wheaton." Tim M.
"Prolotherapy today was on my neck and right foot. Without the prolotherapy I've had I would not be walking without severe pain. The treatments on my neck have made me headache-free. Thank you Dr. Mark. I love prolotherapy!" Bev J.
"Pleased to report such successful results in getting problems associated with a bone spur in the toe area under better control. Even after three treatments, the pain was so greatly reduced that it was no longer painful to slip into a shoe and certainly not when actively engaged in aerobics, step, body pump, etc. as well as normal physical activities. Marvelous! Great caring environment and office staff all around!" Nancy C.
"Fifteen months and twelve treatments ago I had been diagnosed with osteoarthritis in my hands, feet and back, broken bones in my left arm and right shoulder from osteoporosis, and fibromyalgia all over my body. I could not sleep or sit or stand or walk without pain. I could not hold a book, magazine or newspaper to read, or a pen to write or a telephone to talk. My chest was too hot and swollen for chiropractic ultra-sound or therapeutic massage, and water therapy exercises made things worse. I was ordered to stop walking my dog and to stop gardening for more than fifteen minutes at a time. I socialized only with other water therapy patients because none of us could manage more than an hour and a half of visiting or lunching and we didn't have to make excuses when we had to leave because of pain. I did not travel or attend performances because I couldn't sit and I couldn't drive more than a half hour at a time. Desperate, doubting, fearing I was being duped in my needy state, I undertook prolohtherapy. Now, fifteen months and twelve treatments later I walk my dog an hour or more every day. I garden, watering, weeding, planting, raking and hauling garden waste and equipment for three to four hours a day, in two hour increments. I no longer need water therapy, instead I go to the gym for 60 to 70 minutes of exercise on the Nu-step Monday through Friday. I am in book club, reading books, magazines, newspapers and the internet daily. I write poetry by hand and correspond by hand and by email with friends and family. I can and often do talk for two hours at a time on the telephone. I run errands for friends still in too much pain to go themselves. And I travel - two months ago I went by plane and rental car to visit family and friends I had not seen in nine years. Last month I drove from Bemidji to Brainerd to watch a play one of my former students had directed and drove home afterwards. Next month I am going to France with a friend who is ten years younger and I am not afraid pain will incapcitate me. Now, fifteen months and twelve treatments later, I guess I still have osteoarthritis, osteoporosis and fibromyalgia, but I can do all I could do ten years ago. My biggest problem now is finding people to do them with. This is a problem I can deal with. Thank you, Dr. Mark Wheaton and prolotherapy, for making my life worth living again. " Marilyn M.
"A large improvement since this is my 8th visit to repair the lumbar / sacroiliac joint. I can walk comfortably 3 miles, which is a bigger step from starting from starting out with 1 block ranges. I am getting a life back with more mobility. This is beneficial for someone like myself with chronic pain of Fibromyalgia. I advise this approach over conventional treatments. Dr. Wheaton's bedside manner is beneficial and so kind." Louise D.
Former United States Surgeon General, Dr. C. Everett Koop, Endorses Prolotherapy.
The following is a reprinted excerpt from Prolo Your Pain Away by Dr. Ross Hauser. Used with permission from Dr. Koop.
"Prolotherapy is the name some people use for a type of medical intervention in musculo-skeletal pain that causes a proliferation of collagen fibers such as those found in ligaments and tendons, as well as a shortening of those fibers. The "prolo" in Prolotherapy, therefore, comes from proliferative.
Other therapists have referred to this type of treatment as Sclerotherapy. "Sclera" comes from the Greek word "sklera", which means hard. Sclerotherapy, therefore, refers to the same type of medical intervention which produces a hardening of the tissues treated – just as described above in the proliferation of collagen fibers.
Not many physicians are aware of Prolotherapy, and even fewer are adept at this form of treatment. One wonders why that is so. In my opinion, it is because medical folks are skeptical and Prolotherapy, unless you have tried it and proven its worth, seems to be too easy a solution to a series of complicated problems that afflict the human body and have been notoriously difficult to treat by any other method. Another reason is the simplicity of the therapy: Injecting an irritant solution, which may be something as simple as glucose, at the junction of a ligament with a bone to produce the rather dramatic therapeutic benefits that follow.
Another very practical reason is that many insurance companies do not pay for Prolotherapy, largely because their medical advisors do not understand it, have not practiced it, and therefore do not recommend it. Finally, Prolotherapy seems too simple a procedure for a very complicated series of musculoskeletal problems which affect huge numbers of patients. The reason why I consented to write the preface to this book is because I have been a patient who has benefitted from Prolotherapy. Having been so remarkably relieved of my chronic disabling pain, I began to use it on some of my patients – but more on that later.
When I was 40 years old, I was diagnosed in two separate neurological clinics as having intractable (incurable) pain. My comment was that I was too young to have intractable pain. It was by chance that I learned that Gustav A. Hemwall, M.D., a practitioner in the suburbs of Chicago, was an expert in Prolotherapy. When I asked him if he could cure my pain, he asked me to describe it. When I had done the best that I could, he replied., "There is no such pain. Do you mean a pain…" And then he continued to describe my pain much better than I could. When I said, "That’s it exactly," he said, "I can fix you." To make a long story short, my intractable pain was not intractable and I was remarkably improved to the point where my pain ceased to be a problem. Much milder recurrences of that pain over the next 20 years were retreated the same way with equally beneficial results.
I was so impressed with what Dr. Hemwall had done for me that on several occasions, just to satisfy my curiosity, I watched him work in his clinic and witnessed the unbelievable variety of musculoskeletal problems he was able to treat successfully. Many of his patients were people who had been treated for years by all sorts of methods, including major surgery, some of which had left them worse off than they were before. Many of his patients had the lack of confidence in further treatment and the low expectations that folks inflicted with chronic pain frequently exhibit. Yet I saw so many of them cured that I could not help but become a "believer" in Prolotherapy.
I was a pediatric surgeon, and there are not many times when Prolotherapy is needed in children because they just don’t suffer from the same relaxation of musculoskeletal connections that are so amenable to treatment by Prolotherapy. But I noticed frequently that the parents of my patients were having difficulty getting into their coats, or they walked with a limp, or they favored an arm. I would ask what the problem was and then, if it seemed suitable, offer my services in Prolotherapy at no expense, feeling that I was a pediatric surgeon and this was really not my line of work. The results I saw in those many patients were just as remarkable as was the relief I had received in the hands of Dr. Hemwall. I was so impressed with what Prolotherapy could do for musculoskeletal disease that I, at one time, thought that might be the way I would spend my years after formal retirement from the University of Pennsylvania. But the call of President Reagan to be Surgeon General of the United States interrupted any such plans.
The reader may wonder why, in spite of what I have said and what this book contains, there are still so many skeptics about Prolotherapy. I think it has to be admitted that those in the medical profession, once they have departed from their formal training and have established themselves in practice, are not the most open to innovative and new ideas.
Prolotherapy is not a cure-all for all pain. Therefore, the diagnosis must be made accurately and the therapy must be done by someone who knows what he or she is doing. The nice thing about prolotherapy, if properly done, is that it cannot do any harm. How could placing a little sugar-water at the junction of a ligament with a bone be harmful to a patient?
I hope that Dr. Hauser’s book, written for laymen, will push them to inquire more about Prolotherapy and that it might receive the place in modern therapeutics that I think it really deserves."
